Youth Counselor

The Literacy Center seeks a part-time Youth Counselor to work with our Educational Pathways for Out-of-School Youth (EPAY) Program. The purpose of the program is to support students in the acquisition of their high school equivalency and to provide counseling and guidance that sets them on a path for academic, career, and financial success. The Youth Counselor will be responsible for ongoing counseling and support of youth ages 16 – 24.  The Counselor works with students to develop realistic short and long term goals and to make referrals to other supportive services as needed.  The Youth Counselor will work closely and collaboratively with partners at Bristol Community College and representatives of the Career Center to ensure program goals are met.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide comprehensive guidance, as well as individual and group counseling to out-of-school youth enrolled in the EPAY program

  • Complete individual interviews with all new and prospective students

  • Develop and implement career exploration activities with enrolled youth

  • Closely monitor student progress, attendance, and goal acquisition

  • Submit monthly reports on each student’s progress to program partners

  • Plan and conduct educational field trips based on student career goals

  • Assist in program recruitment and student orientation

  • Make referrals to supportive services as needed

  • Develop and implement activities and trainings to bolster students’ financial literacy and leadership skills

  • Contribute to ongoing curriculum development and program continuous improvement

  • Attend a minimum of 2 monthly program related meetings and appropriate professional development

  • Attend monthly supervision meetings with The Literacy Center’s Executive Director and other relevant staff

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or mental health counseling

  • 3-5 years experience with at-risk populations and vulnerable youth

  • Clinical experience with individuals and groups

  • Individual must be highly resourceful and self-driven with minimal oversight needed to achieve program goals

 

SUPERVISION/HOURS:

  • Reports to Executive Director of The Literacy Center

  • Part-time  12 hours/week, 42 weeks/year  (Mon – Thurs 9am – 12pm)

  • Program is provided primarily at Bristol Community College’s Attleboro campus with some activities and counseling taking place at The Literacy Center

  • This program is a partnership between Bristol Community College, The Literacy Center, and the Career Center.

 

COMPENSATION:

  • $24.00/hour compensation (12 hours/week, 42 weeks/year based on The Literacy Center’s academic calendar

  • Opt-in Simple IRA with 3% employer match

  • Unlimited use of the downtown Attleboro YMCA branch’s fitness classes & facilities

  • Cellphone provided to be used for EPAY Program purposes
