Tutors change lives.

Becoming a tutor at The Literacy Center is a rewarding way to give back to your community in a meaningful, lasting way. Each year, more than 120 people tutor over 150 students at The Literacy Center, providing an invaluable amount of hours in support of our students' goals.  Tutors often help students with the following subjects:

  • Reading & Writing

  • Basic Math

  • Computer Skills

  • Career readiness and resume development

  • English pronunciation & conversation

  • Citizenship exam preparation

  • High School Equivalency Exam Prep

  • Trade-specific and industry exam prep

No background or experience is necessary, just a willingness to help and an eagerness to learn. All volunteer tutors receive comprehensive training prior to being matched with a student. Our Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with you to find the best match for your unique skills and ability.

To become a tutor, email Evan Dardano, Director of Student Services, at edardano@theliteracycenter.com to discuss the next steps.

Training includes self-paced videos as well as hands-on experience observing classes in-person or online, with guidance from mentor teachers.

These training sessions will cover the best practices in tutoring adult learners, and you'll have the opportunity to compare notes with teachers, tutors, and staff, and review a range of hard copy and digital resources.

Our training sessions occur several times each year: September, November, February, April, and July.
